Thatcher Adventures | A Cape May Weekend Trip
Cape May
A Weekend Down Memory Lane
Cape May is a family favorite! It is probably my Grandmother's favorite place in the world, and it is where my parents got engaged. We use to come to the beach here every summer until I was about 10 years old. After that, it got easier to go camping because I have two younger brothers. I haven't been back in years! It was so fun going back and having all of these childhood memories pop up.
We planned this trip for over a year, which, if you know the Thatchers, is something we rarely do. We are more of the go-with-the-flow bunch. Luckily, we could still go on the trip, and it didn't get canceled because of covid. It was such a great time, and I'm so happy that we got to take both of my Grandmothers with us.
We stayed at the Chalfonte with our whole crew. It was awesome because we had our own section of the hotel, and each could get our own rooms. Since we were there before Memorial Day, it was still pretty empty, and we had most of the huge front porch to ourselves. If you've been to the Chalfonte Hotel before, you know that the wrap-around front porch is a selling point! We use to stay at the Chalfonte when I was younger too. My parents would go eat in the Magnolia Room and drop Colin, Ethan, and me off in the backyard with the hotel babysitters.
My favorite family Cape May tradition - only applicable to me really is visiting Page Street. Not exactly a tourist attraction; it's not even really a street but more of an alley. However, as an 8-year-old girl, it was a big deal to get my picture taken there every year. (It's like two blocks behind the Chalfonte if you are curious.) I mean, the spelling is different, but even so, it was significant to a kid who could never find their name on those personalized key chains.
We did all the other family favorites on the trip as well! Mad Batter for breakfast, Chalfonte Hotel breakfast, The Ugly Mug, and The Merion Inn for dinner. We also tried a new (new to us) little hot dog stand by the beach with a great selection plus vegan and gluten-free hot dogs! We even hit the beach up for a bit; it was still pretty cold that weekend, only about 65 degrees. My favorite part was shopping at the Washington Street Mall! There were so many new cute stores, sidewalk sales, and of course, I got to visit an old favorite, The Whale's Tale. I remember spending so much time looking at the American Girl books in the kid's section of that store.
It was such a great weekend making new memories with my favorite people and reminiscing about old Cape May memories.
